How large an area should be defended against competitors. Migration - long-distance movement of a population associated with a change of seasons. How do animals find their way on migration (proximal question): piloting (use of familiar landmarks) Offspring follow their parents: compass orientation (movement that is orientated in a specific direction) They use sun during the day, and start at night. Sun is difficult to use because it changes position during the day, and a species has to have an internal clock (circadian rhythm) If the weather is cloudy, and the sun and stars are not seen, they use earth"s magnetic field: true navigation (ability to locate a specific place on earth"s surface. With evolution, it is possible to lose the need to migrate.
