What is behavior: what an animal does and how it does it. Innate behavior is developmentally fixed and inborn: hardwired, in their genes. Instinctive behavior is a behavioral pattern that reliably develops in animals that receive normal upbringing and adequate nutrition is displayed in its functional form on its 1st performance: may be shaped by learning. Proximate causation: describes how a behavior is initiated or expressed, studies the immediate cause and effect of a behavior, studies the genetic or physiological mechanisms that lead to a behavior. The lobster finding spots to hide: what stimulation could occur in the surrounding, the physiological niche that is created. Ultimate causation: describes the reason why a behavior exists, adaptive value (effect on reproductive success) or the evolutionary significance evolutionary adaptation evolutionary origin of the observed behavior. The lobsters need to find a safe environment.
