The first example of this being, the enlightened thinkers (i. e. deists and/or. Enlightenment era in europe, rationalism begins to gain popularity. However, this too, confronts tension during the french revolution, when church property is seized and sold to the general public, causing opposition in the revolution. Eventually, a solution is found in- between the two extremes of thinking, by allowing for a moderate reclamation of church property. In france, the battle and tension between old versus new ways of thinking is constantly challenged; with both the revolutionaries and monarchy going to great means to maintain their power. At the same time, this extremism causes polarity within the country and creates a new political stance, conservatism.
