Document Summary

Housing and transportation are important to quality of life. Canada"s housing system today has many options for older people but also many gaps. There are geographic and financial barriers to access quality housing that meets specific needs and adequate transportation. More than a quarter of senior households live in below standard housing. Housing and transportation should maximize autonomy but provide enough security for a feeling of comfort. Aging in place: the situation of older people living into late old age in the same place they lived in their middle years. Living in an institution; living with a spouse, grown children, relatives or non- relatives; or living alone. Most older canadians (92. 5 percent) live in private dwellings; of those, 55. 2 percent live in single detached homes, 30. 7 percent in apartments, and 1. 4 percent in mobile homes (cmhc, 2010a). Only 7. 5 percent live in institutions (collective dwellings); 2 percent to 3 percent live with relatives or non-relatives.
