Sampling in quantitative studies is meant to be reflective of the population. Cases selected that carry aspects of the social world to be studied. Sampling in qual research is not a mathematically accurate reproduction of the entire population. Qual - identify relevant categories at work in a few cases. Little knowledge of the group being sampled. Cases selected gradually based on content of the case. Convenience - get cases in any way. Criteria for sampling is easy to reach or available. Quota - preset numbers of cases selected from predetermined categories to represent diversity in population using haphazard methods. Start by identifying categories needed to be sampled for a diverse representation. Then determine how many cases needed for the quota. Can be misrepresentative because quotas can be filled haphazardly - getting 5 males from a bar. Purposive - get all possible cases using many methods. Usually used in field or exploratory research.
