Basilar portion of the skull and sphenoid bone create the slope: divert food away from larynx and into esophagus, sites to lodge foreign objects within the pharynx. 9 cartilages bony skeleton to protect the vocal cord. Three cartilages are unpaired: thyroid, epiglottis, cricoid. Posterior portion is much thicker than ant. Marks junction between the larynx and trachea, beginning of esophagus. Adam"s apple = superior junction between two thyroid cartilages.
