Potter and perry- 1017-1032: subjective and emotional experience, relief from pain. Basic human right: nociception- 4 specific processes: Transduction- tissue damaged- mechanical, chemical stimuli - releases sensitizing and inflammatory substances transmission-pain sensitizing substances surround. Perception-conscious awareness of pain- once pain stimulus reaches cortex, brain interprets intensity, quality and character of pain. Pseudo addiction- increasing demands for opioids mistakenly diagnosed with addiction. Cancer pt can be nociceptive neuropathic, acute, chronic or both. Physiological factors: age, fatigue, heredity, neurological function,(analgesics, previous experience, attention, family support, spiritual factors. Anxiety: meaning of pain- like why they have it, cultural factors. Chapter 11-jarvis: nociception- term used to describe how noxious stimuli typically perceived as pain, sources of pain: nociceptive-tissue injury- well localized-aching. Neuropathic- originates in one but felt in another -innervated by same spinal level- difficult for brain to differentiate -lesion or disease affecting the somatosensory nervous system. Somatic- superficial from skin surface and subcutaneous tissues or deep, derived from joints.
