Document Summary

Altruism: refers to an unselfish regard for the welfare of others, a willingness to put your neck on the line to help. However, some theorists have argued that we often have some selfish (or self-focused) reason for helping others: people do choose to help eachother sometimes. We help partly because we have internalized some helping social norms. We are expected to reciprocate when someone else treats us well. As a member of society, we are expted to contribute to its welfare in a positive way. The most infamous case of bystander apathy. The case demonstrates the counter-intuitive fact that, if you need help, more bystanders are worse than one bystander. If you"re in a public place and you need help, you are better off with one person watching than 38. More people means less individual responsibility, more anonymity and a loss of individual identity.
