Introduction to language: communication not limited to words or language, male peacock shows tail- worthiness as mate, horse lay ears against head- sign of aggression. English only uses 40 phonemes- vocab of 500,000. 3000 oral languages- based on combining different sounds in various ways- all languages contain some similar features in underlying structures. Symbols of language-morphemes- smallest unis of sound contain information- words but a single word made up of more than one morpheme. lady - single word can be made up of more than one morpheme. Transparent orthographic- some language more consistent letter to sound correspondence- given letter always make same sound-much easier time learning language -transparent only one language possible. Grammar- rules govern how we put words to form a sentence- and differ in order of words of sentence. 0-4 months- turn head sound-make noise when spoken to. 6-12- tries to imitate sounds and babble- understand no.
