PSYCH 2H03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Visual Search, Distributed Knowledge, Transfer Function
Document Summary
Vision usually conquers other senses (e. g. when you watch a ventriloquist, you identify the sounds as coming from the puppet because you see the puppet"s mouth moving) Form perception: the process through which basic shapes and sizes of objects are identified. Object recognition: the process through which an object"s identity is identified. Seeing and perceiving are not the same thing. The brain engages in parallel processing, in which a pattern"s basic features are identified and taken into account at the same time as the brain areas analyzing the pattern"s large- scale configuration. Perception is required to distinguish between figure and ground, and to determine how the form is arranged in three dimensions. Organization determines the most immediate impressions of the stimulus. Interpretation must fit with the incoming stimulus information. The perceptual system prefers the simplest explanation of the stimulus. The perceptual system avoids interpretations that involve coincidences. The process of perception organizes stimulus information to distinguish between and identify objects.
