Population/universe - group consisting of inds who share a least one characteristic: usually study a sample rather than an entire population, smaller # of inds from the population, researchers want to generalize from the sample population. Researcher strives to give every member of the population an equal chance of being drawn into the sample. Use a table of random #"s constructed so to generate a series of #"s having no particular pattern or order: yields a representative sample similar to that produced by putting slips of paper into a hat. Mean of sample as x bar and mean of population as mu to avoid confusion. Standard deviation of sample as s and standard deviation of population as baby sigma. If raw data are normally distributed to begin w then the sample mean is normal regardless of sample size: the mean of sampling distribution of means (the mean of the means) is equal to the tru pop mean.
