Most inds who are abductees sincerely believe that they have been abducted. 3 mill believe they have been abductee and 100 mill think that they are aliens. First published by betty and barney hill in 1961. Abduction discourse is a living myth body of stories making up a system of beliefs. Composed of 4 main story types: over time belief becomes a reality. Falsehood fails to capture the relevance of myth. Myths are the glue of society that binds us to each other and our traditions. Five building blocks construct a myth: narrative form story like quality (beginning, middle, end, means of ordering, heroic characters journey to the supernatural realm, struggle w power and return victorious. Journey must occur to save the ind or soc. Both are settings of story: usually battle in a sacred place. Imparts force and credibility to the narrative: archetypical language transcendent vocabulary that engages emotions and mind.
