Deviance is a matter of definition socially constructed: what kind of social objects actions become will depend on social context how these beliefs are expressed and by whom. Bodily objects become what they are to us through social definition. Inds employ many strategies to control info about themselves to make personal characteristics less/visible. Body mod is voluntary and worthy of judgment so inds wonder why. We are trained to look for social and collective explanations for behaviour where other scholars might look @ the ind: atkinson and young: neoprimitive practioners of body mod. Reflect personal choices and aspects of their biographies important to them. How inds define and apply social meanings to others. How do inds react to your presentations: vail: the choices we make are a result from social contexts.
