In a heterogeneous group, you can divide these groups into subgroups = heterogeneity or horizontal differentiation qualities of an individual have no social meaning or consequence. Example: colour of your car, your shoe size, etc. Understanding of diversity comes through understanding of heterogeneity, social stratification, social inequality and minority group status. To have value, the subgroups need to be socially meaningful = nominal parameter that they belong to: can be operationalized/measured political or ideological agenda, quality/characteristic of individuals and the different levels of groups.
