Racial profiling = form of racism practiced primarily by policing organizations, law enforcement + security systems: means of maintaining social control based on surveillance. Different from criminal profiling because it is frequently based on ethno- racial characteristics. Toronto star study in 2002 = blacks were charged more frequently, treated more harshly and more likely to be denied bail + held in custody for bail hearing. Wortley and marshall investigation on kingston police = blacks were four times more likely to be stopped by an officer than white drivers, aboriginals were also more likely to be stopped. Racial profiling of muslim and arab communities: the war on terror. Airline personnel + security staff can subject those who look like they are. Arab/muslim to higher levels of scrutiny: ex. Lawyer of the canadian islamic congress on his way to ottawa to meet with minister of justice was pulled aside, ultimately missed his flight.
