During the 20th century genocide killed almost 4 times as many people as all the wars, revolutions, and civil wars combined in that period = 60 million people dead. 1995 27 million refugees worldwide = 1 out of every 280 people on earth. Hard to distinguish between genocide and other related crimes human rights violations, and war crimes. Genocide typically happens during the middle of an armed conflict (civil war) Politicians use the word in different ways, and are reluctant to apply it to their allies: ex. Chinese invasion of tibet in 1950 = china argued that it was just reclaiming a past province -> every country (nepal, great britain, india and the usa) rejected. Genocide against tutsi minority in rwanda in 1994 = 1 million rwandans were murdered by hutus -> the world watched because it was easier to be ignorant than to try and intervene.
