Electoral systems: proportional representation (pr) among older democracies, this one was the more common system. Total votes cast for a party in elections = proportion of seats the party gains in legislature. Example: party with 53% of votes will win 53% of seats: first-past-the-post system (fptp) Greatly increase the proportion of seats won by the party with the largest number of votes. Total votes cast for a party < proportion of seats the party gains in legislature.
