Parents who have just received a diagnosis of a chronic illness may be very angry. Although they are angry at the diagnosis, this anger may be projected to the nursing staff that is providing care to the child. Accept this anger as a normal emotional reaction to receiving bad news and continue to provide support to the family and the child. Refer for counseling and additional assistance as needed. Parents grieve for the loss of the perfect child and other losses such as the following: Loss of expectations for the development and life expectancy of the child with the chronic condition. Child"s loss of the parents" expectation of childhood. Parents may blame themselves or their spouse if the condition is genetic. When the child"s condition results in a significant disability, the family has a daily reminder of their losses and how they differ from other families.
