Learning Objective Twelve: Name the two major types of cells in the nervous
system and describe the primary functions of each.
The brain is part of the central nervous system, so when referring to the nervous system it
automatically means brain. The nervous system works because the basic unit of all the nervous
systems are neurons. Neurons are one of the major types of brain cells.
The Neuron (nerve cell) is the fundamental building block of the nervous system. They
are designed to receive information from the environment and from other neurons, and to
transmit this information to other neurons, or to our muscle or to our glands in order for us to
make a response. Communication between neurons is necessary for normal functioning of the
brain and the spinal cord. The structure of the neurons is a specialized structure that enable
them to communicate with other neurons using both electrical and chemical signals.
