Document Summary

Psyc 2010 - chapter 4: infancy: early learning, motor. Inborn, automatic responses to a particular form of stimulation. Most newborn re exes disappear within the rst six months. This is because development of the cerebral cortex eventually makes way for voluntary control of behaviour. Throughout the day and night, newborn infants move in and out of ve states of arousal (degrees of sleep and wakefulness): regular (nrem) sleep - full rest, no movement, regular breathing, low-brain wave activity (8-9 hrs) As infant ages, it becomes more accustomed to a circadian rhythm (a 24 hr schedule) Sleeping babies are more affected by fullness hunger than by darkness light. Researchers believe rem sleep is vital for growth of the cns and learning, which would explain why 50% of babies" sleep is rem sleep! Rem sleep also protects the health of the eye by allowing oxygen ow to parts of the eye that does not have its own blood supply.
