Children"s sense of self emerges in the early years and continues to develop as they become cognitively and emotionally more sophisticated. Test used to determine development of a sense of self by using a dot of red colour (rouge) on the nose of the child or animal. The test subject is placed in front of a mirror and observed to see if recognition occurs. Children at the age of two years can refer to themselves verbally, either by name or by pronoun (me, mine, etc. Children at this age will describe themselves in terms of their physically observable traits (hair colour, etc. ), their abilities and preferences ( i like to run! ), their social relationships ( i have a sister ), and their psychological states ( i"m happy! ). Around the age of eight years, children become more likely to use knowledge about themselves to evaluate and modify their behaviour.
