Document Summary
Ultimate: ultimate causes are explanations at the evolutionary level. Proximate: proximate factors are the immediate causes and mechanisms of the behavior. Organisms are vessels genes use to reproduce themselves. Successful genes= promote survival in past (ancestral environment), more common in later generations. Behaviour via either 1) nativism: the philosophical view that we are born with knowledge already present. 2) empiricism: the philosophical view that we obtain all knowledge through observable facts and experiences. Genes: small units of dna that direct the synthesis of proteins and enzymes and result in the expression of inheritable traits. Genetic material (dna) combines via male sperm and female egg (sex cells only have half of chromosomes because of cell division meiosis) Dna organized into 46 chromosomes (23 pairs: 22 are autosomes and 1 is sex chromosome (xx female, male xy-determines gender of baby) Proteins: control cellular machinery, traits, genes are regions of chromosome which encode particular proteins.
