PSYC 271 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Paul Broca, Behavioral Neuroscience, Frontal Lobe
Document Summary
Descartes first to suggest that link exists between human mind and the brain. Idea was that the mind controlled the movements of body while the body supplied the mind with info about what was happening in the environment. Johannes muller was one of most important early scientists in biopsychology and doctorine of specific nerve energies and how they all carry an electrical impulse. Phrenological theory of gall and spurzheim was one of first to suggest that different parts of the brain had different functions. Thought depressions and bumps on skull determined size of the brain and indicated parts of brain that controlled certain traits. Fluorens credited with the end of phrenology by work on experimental ablation; function of brain determined by observing animal behaviour that cannot be performed when that part of the brain is damaged. His work supported localization of function theory. Paul broca also contributed to this theory.
