Described 5 diff ways indivs could adapt to condition of anomie strain. Known for taking durkheim"s concept of anomie * using it to explain high rates of deviancy/non-conformity in america. 1938 article social structure and anomie - amongst most frequently cited works in criminology & sociology. Used notion of anomie to describe situation where social structure exerted pressure on certain indivs to engage in deviant behaviour. Theory came to be known as strain theory. Said deviant/non-conforming behaviour caused by disjunction b/w cultural goals & institutional means. At same time american dream existed, not everyone had access to. Attempt to get decent education, find job, work hard to get promoted, save money to buy wanted items. Finding unconventional/non-conforming way to achieve cultural goals. Most likely to lead to deviance & criminality. Innovator may subscribe to cultural goals & believe he/she deserves new car but goes out to steal when realizing he/she cannot afford one.
