Document Summary

Sykes & matza began 1957 article techniques of neutralization by acknowledging. Sutherland"s classic statement that delinquent/criminal behaviour learned in process of social interaction (pg664) Sykes & matza observed that there had been little follow-up research/theoretical elaboration on sutherland"s contention that part of process involved learning motives/drives/rationalization/attitudes going along w/ being criminal. Cohen merged merton"s anomie theory w/ sutherland"s differential association theory to identify types of strain experienced by lower-class makes & show how led certain indivs to adopt subcultural values & form delinquent subcultures. Cohen argued lower-class males had same aspirations for social status as middle & upper class males. Said that when trying to compete for status in school, could not meet standards of middle-class measuring rod. Said would develop status deprivation/status as result. Creating new forms of acceptable behaviour/conduct for members of own subculture. Would permit members of subcultures to engage in criminal behaviour w/o usual feelings of shame/guilt.
