Involved major shift from traditional religious beliefs toward optimistic belief in power of human reason to make world better. Enlightenment thinkers - through reason & science, people could understand world. Ideological conflict - centre of political life for more than 2 centuries. Ideology - instrument of ruling class used to justify harsh realities of capitalist system by. Validity exists for negative characterizations of ideology. Keep in mind that each ideology - broad perspective containing many variations evolving over time. Not always easy to distinguish between ideologies.
