Membership of political parties in many of advanced democracies dropped substantially since 1960s. Party membership often increases substantially when leaders/candidates being selected. Most major parties may compromise principles to gain support from voters/from financial backers. In order to gain & maintain political power. Political party - organization w/ central role in competition for political power in legislative bodies & in governing. Cadre party - loosely organized party usually established by members of legislative body w/ support of local notables. Concerned primarily w/ electing members of party to legislative bodies rather than w/ building strong centralized membership-based organization outside of legislature. Mass party - party drawing support from regular dues-paying membership & features strong party organization outside of legislature. Tended to be more disciplined than cadre. Generally had stronger link b/w citizens & political leaders than cadre. Power tends to be concentrated in hands of party officials.
