PHIL 1200H Chapter 1: Notes pg. 10 - 22
Document Summary
An argument establishes and attempts to justify a point of view. Many of our strong beliefs will influence arguments unbeknownst to the arguer and create new ideas/consequences. For example, religious points of view may not convince people who do not share the same idea. It is not necessary to remove belief systems from arguments, but rather regard them as illegitimate clauses. Many corporations utilize arguments to their advantage. Philip morris cigarettes acknowledge the negative side effects from smoking cigarettes and tell their audience that their cigarettes are more healthy than other. To effectively appeal to an audience, you need to be able to appeal to different belief systems. Appealing to a specific audience narrows interests. Sometimes sympathy can be used for poor arguments, as emotions can mask the questionable validity of evidence.
