SOCI 2700H Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Sperm Bank, Birth Weight, Miscarriage
Document Summary
Proportion of traditional families" (one mother, one father, at least one child) has continued to decline while other family structures have increased. There is also a steep decline in marriage rates since the 1990s. Married-couple families constitute about 70% of all families in 2001. In the short term, cohabitation is mainly seen as a way of delaying marriage, especially for young adults. A longer period of singlehood also delays marriage. The proportion of 25-29 year old adults who are not cohabitating or married are significantly increasing. This longer period of singlehood results from: necessity of obtaining an advanced education, establishing oneself at their job, getting settled economically. Children benefit much more than adults from their parents" marriage. Children who experience a conflictual parental marriage benefit less than children living with a well-balanced single parent. Very few marriages are detrimental to children; even smaller amount of divorces benefit the children at all.
