Sociology 100: chapter 3 culture and socialization. What are canadians like? talk about landscape, weather, how our government is run, what languages we speak, sports (hockey), art (music, painting) Culture: a system of behaviour, beliefs, knowledge, practices, values and concrete material (what houses we have ) . How: shifted, became independent from britain, racial acceptance. Is there a single canadian culture, or are their reginal cultures : no, there"s lots of variation. How about rural culture : having your own land, socialization; everybody knows everybody else. What about youth culture : go out, party, socialization through the internet; these things change overtime, maybe more global, through the internet can connect with people from other countries/culture, more media exposure of minorities, Is there a senior culture : different view of the world itself; ex. Important to distinguish between society-wide cultures and smaller-group cultures. Cultures are frequently contested (challenged), particularity in modern societies: debates within cultures with what they should be.
