NURS 287 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Case Fatality Rate, Health Canada, William Farr
Document Summary
The combination of characteristics can determine the risk or degree of susceptibility: ex. You might find that only older populations are susceptible to a certain virus after looking at everyone"s age. (people react to the disease differently based on their characteristics) Ex: a mosquito or contaminated water supply. Ex: use of immunizations, personal hygiene, good nutrition: 2nd stage= pathogenesis: when the human host begins to react to the agent. Pathogenesis ends in recovery, disability, or death: secondary prevention: is early diagnosis and disability limitation. Education, selective placement, work therapy, potentially helping patient/family through death. Screening: testing individuals who do not have symptoms. Surveillance: is the constant monitoring of diseases to asses patterns and quickly identify events that do not fit the pattern. Relationship between a stressor and disease= association and causation. Association: reasonable evidence that a connection exists between a stressor and disease/health challenge.
