All cultures accomplish communication through some form of language, the most distinctive characteristic. Phonology: some sounds of other languages may be similar to the researcher. Once knowing all the sounds, they can begin to study the patterns and discover underlying rules, then explain combinations of sounds. Next they need to isolate the phonemes (smallest class of sound that make a difference in meaning). Phonetic alphabets are used to distinguish the sounds in a way that is comprehensible to anyone who knows the system. Morphology: studying an inventory of sound working out the combinations that have meaning (cid:862)(cid:373)orphe(cid:373)es(cid:863).
