Kosher foods are certified by rabbinical organizations which allow certified kosher foods to display a symbol and labelling indicating kosher status. Increasingly, food products are bearing the halal designation, which means that the product conforms to islamic dietary laws. What is a food additive: a food additive is any substance added to food. Intentional additives must be approved by food and drug administration before they can be used: indirect additives are contaminants substances that accidentally get into a food product during production, processing, or packaging.
