Very old profession, traces back to mesopotamia. Now using the word sex workers instead. Before 2014, prostitution itself was legal but activities related were illegal. Transporting a person to a bawdy house. Allowing a place to be used as bawdy house, or being an inmate. Communicating in the public for offering or obtaining prostitution. 1983: fraser committee = study porn and prostitution to give suggestion to the parliament. Suggested to remove offence of prostitution but government made the law even more strict (not allowing to stop anyone in a public space to negotiate sexual services for payment) This was challenged, but in 1990, they did not change. Made police easier to prosecute prostitutes and client but did not decrease street prostitution. In 1999, an act allowing police and social workers to detain under-18 prostitutes for up to 72 hrs. Often use strategy of entrapment, pretending to be clients who want sex. Recent years have been targeted to customers.
