Document Summary
Time of emphasis on humanity and the renewed fascination with the classical world. Era of rapid transitions between 1350 and 1550. Italy was far more urban, and populations were organized by occupation (social position and wealth) Cities dominate their regions economically, politically, and culturally, and served as convenient centres of judicial and ecclesiastical power. Italy became the banking capital of the word, thanks to their city wealth. In rural communities, farms were either owned by a family and left for the heir, or were part of sharecropping. In cities, distinctions were based rst on occupation, which largely corresponded to social position and wealth. City governments created monopolies called guilds or companies- each city had its own hierarchy of guilds: clothiers, metalworkers, etc. > bankers, merchants, civic/church admin. > grocers, masons, other skilled workers. Being part of a guild meant wealth and security. Majority of urban inhabitants were not members of guilds, and worked as wage labourers (poorer people)
