PSYC 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10.3: Frontal Lobe, Executive Functions, Prefrontal Cortex
Document Summary
Physical transition from childhood to adolescence starts with puberty. Puberty begins at approximately age 11 in girls and age 13 in boys. These changes are primarily caused by hormonal activity. Physical growth is stimulated by the pituitary gland. The hypothalamus begins stimulating the release of hormones. These hormones contribute to the development of primary and secondary sex traits in boys and girls. Primary sex traits are changes in the body that are part of reproduction. Secondary sex traits are changes in the body that are not part of reproduction. Menarche: the onset of menstruation typically occurs around age 12. The timing of menarche is in uenced by physiological and environmental factors. Puberty happens much earlier today the it did in the 19th century. -this can be due to the behavioural changes that increase body fat and increased environmental stresses that increase stress hormones in the body. Puberty can bring a host of developmental changes.
