Document Summary

Module 3. 2: how the nervous system works: cells and. Neurotoxic means that something specifically attacks the nervous system. Networks of nervous system cells working together are critical for basic life functions like breathing and having a heartbeat. Neurons are one of the major types of cells found in the nervous system, that are responsible for sending and receiving messages throughout the body. There are parts of the cell specialized for receiving incoming information from other neurons and parts of the cell specialized for transmitting information to other neurons. All neurons have a cell body (known as the soma), the part of a neuron that contains the nucleus that houses the cell"s genetic material. Genes in the cell body synthesize proteins that form the chemicals and structures that allow the neuron to function. The activity of these genes can be influenced by the input coming from other cells.
