PSYC 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7.2: Temporal Lobe, Mnemonic, Amygdala
Document Summary
Encoding is the process of transferring sensory and perceptual information into memory traces. Retrieval is the process of accessing old memories and bringing them back to short-term memory. Storage is the time and manner at which information is retained between encoding and retrieval. Rehearsal is a method of encoding: not very effective, (cid:373)atters how it"s rehearsed rather tha(cid:374) how lo(cid:374)g it"s rehearsed maintenance rehearsal is a prolonged exposure to information by repeating it, does little to contribute to long-term memories. Elaborative rehearsal is prolonged exposure to information by thinking about its meaning: more effective at contributing to long-term memories. Levels of processing affect long-term but not working memory: shallow processing, superficial properties of a stimulus, sound or spelling of a word, deep processing, meaning of something, 7x more effective for retrieval. Self-reference effect occurs when you think about information in terms of how it relates to you: effective way of remembering.
