The atkinson-shiffrin model: memory processes that allow us to record & retrieve experiences & info, atkinson-shiffrin model of memory. Assumes memory is a multistage process in which info flows along 3 separate & interacting memory stores. The distinction between short and long term memory is seen in the serial position effect". Participants are read a list of unrelated words and asked to recall as many as they can. Researchers then look at memory as a function of each word"s position on the list. Find u-shaped pattern as a function of position in the list. Superior recall of early (primacy effect) and most recent (recency effect) words. Primary effect info transferred to long-term memory. Recency effect info still in short-term memory. The dip in the middle of the serial position effect"s u curve is cause by two different mechanisms: Proactive interference: first info learned occupies memory resources, leaving fewer resources to remember later, incoming info.
