PSYC 4750 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Arthur Schopenhauer, Drive Theory, Homeostasis
Document Summary
Schopenhauer says the inner drive to an innate instinctual process that compels the persons into action towards their goals as if they have no choice. Today this is known as a (cid:498)drive(cid:499) as it refers to an internal push, urge or desire that moves a person into action. Internal motivation refers to drives and physiological and psychological needs. External motivation concerns a persons incentives and goals. The combined push and pull effects of internal and external sources must exceed some threshold for behavior to occur. Internal disposition is to perform a particular action. In other circumstances it is due to a situational stimulus. Can occur with little internal but a lot of external. Physiological needs refer to deficits that occur in the material body or mind. Psychological needs are those that are merged into consciousness: physiological. A need is felt unpleasant and motivates persons to reduce that feeling. Example is drop in glucose = a required increase in energy.
