The economy"s natural rate of unemployment refers to the amount of unemployment that the economy normally experiences. Cyclical unemployment refers to the year-to-year fluctuations in unemployment around its natural rate. Statistics canada surveys about 50,000 households every month. Statistics canada places each adult (aged 15 or older) into one of three categories: employed, unemployed, or not in the labour force. Definition of labour force: the total number of workers, including both the employed and the unemployed. Definition of unemployment rate: the percentage of the labour force that is unemployed. Definition of labour-force participation rate: the percentage of the adult population that is in the labour force. Statistics canada provides labour data as presented in the table below.
