CLAS104 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Eleusinian Mysteries, Cronus
Document Summary
The olympians are the offspring of cronus and rhea: hestia (vesta) goddess of the hearth (the fire place, which was believed to be the center of the home), of cooking. She is very important in religion but not in mythology. Hestia was a virgin goddess; one of the few aphrodite had no power over. Goddess of chastity: hades (pluto) god of the underworld, very solemn, very respected and feared god. Known for the peacock: poseidon (neptune) god of the oceans. Highly respected, very serious, more active in myth than hades. Often called the earth shaker since he makes earthquakes. He is often identifies as a muscular mature male, and by his trident. Rather short-tempered: demeter (ceres) goddess of harvest and fertility. Portrayed as a matron, a mature woman still beautiful: hera (juno) always bugging zeus, very vindictive and vengeful. Always pursues the offspring of zeus and others. Very majestic, the royal consort of the sky god.
