Document Summary

Earthquakes: an earthquake is a vibration of the earth produced by the rapid release of energy. Often caused by slippage along faults: energy radiates outward from hypocentre in the form of seismic waves and dissipates with distance, epicenter is the point on the surface of earth directly above the hypocentre. Small earthquakes that follow the main earthquake are called aftershocks: this is because the plates still adjust after they snap back at the hypocenter (snapping back causes displacement further down the fault) Foreshocks are small earthquakes that precede the main earthquake. Seismo graphs are instruments that record the movement of earth. Seismo grams are the records made by seismographs. Body waves: travel through earth"s interior, primary waves (longitudinal and compressional) Push-pull waves that compress and expand the rocks in the direction of wave propagation. When the energy exits the rock returns to its original position causing a vibration. Can travel through all three phases of matter.
