Waves on a string: the wave equation: Let us consider a string that is attached at it"s edges to two fixed points such that it is under a specific amount of tension. Now let us look closely at the disturbance being sent along the string, and examine the way we are going to generate this disturbance in the first place. Let us say that at one end of the string there is an oscillator, oscillating in a simple harmonic motion. We can describe the motion of this oscillator either in terms of a sin or a cosine function of time. For the purposes of waves we will choose the sin form as it has become more standard.
