Document Summary

Chapter 1, part 2 notes sampling ecological research. Ecologists design their studies based on their research questions, the temporal and spatial scale of their studies, and available research tools. While the overview of ecology presented in the previous section offers a brief preview of the material covered, it is by necessity a rough sketch and highly abstract. As you will see, the diversity of approaches used by different ecologists is spectacularly varied. Some will focus on construction of theory from first principles, leading to a series of testable hypotheses. Some will take these hypotheses and challenge them with data collected through careful observation. Others will perform experimental manipulations in the lab, and others perform such tests in the field. These studies may last weeks, seasons, decades, or even millennia. Studies may involve a focus on individuals, small or large populations, communities, or even entire regions.
