Louis xiv: king of france, versailles was his palace most impressive building of mid 1600s. Basso continuo: low melodic instrument (such as cello) and keyboard accompaniment (harpsichord) Monody: a single voice w/ basso continuo, that imitated natural rhythms of speech. Artusi monteverdi controversy: artusi believed in first practice, rules of music should be strictly followed. Monteverdi believed in second practice, that they could be to make music more expressive. Orfeo: opera based on the ancient greek myth of orpheus and eurydice. Opera: large scale stage productions involving music dance costumes, elaborate plots. Aria: accompanied by full orchestra, passionate moments that explore emotion. Recitative: accompanied by basso continuo, dialogue and quick interchanges between people. Ritornello: instrumental, appears in several places in a musical work. Purcell: most talented composer of late 17th century.
