Motivation: the drive to satisfy a need and the reason why people behave the way they do. Motivated behaviour is energized, directed and sustained. Emphasizes external rewards and punishments as keys in determining students motivation. Incentives: positive or negative stimuli or events that can motivate students behaviour. Examples: numerical scores, letter grades, providing students with recognition. Humanistic perspective: stresses students" capacity for personal growth, freedom to choose their destiny, and positive qualities. Motivation is associated with hierarchy of needs. Hierarchy of needs: a multi-step model for explaining human motivation and behaviour creased by maslow. Individuals progress to growth needs only when lower-level needs have been met. Levels: (1) physiological needs, (2) need for safety, (3) need for love and acceptance, (4) need for self-esteem and respect of others, (5) knowledge and understanding needs, (6) need for aesthetics/beauty, (7) self-actualization, (8) self-transcendence. Self-transcendence: connecting to something beyond the self in order to help others find self-fulfillment and realize their potential.
