Serious disorder found in about . 7% of people. Accounts for a higher percentage of in-patients in mental facilities than any other disease. More prevalent in men than women, found sooner in men (about 4 years earlier) and often more severe. Can make full, partial, or no recovery. Serious decline in ability to work, care for themselves, and connect socially with others. Manifest, for at least one month, 2 or more of the following; disorganized thought and speech, delusions, hallucinations, grossly disorganized or catatonic behaviour, and negative symptoms. Not usually continuously present, person typically goes through episodic phases lasting for weeks or months, separated by periods of normality. Speech patterns that reflect an underlying deficit in the ability to think in a logical, coherent manner. Loose word associations-ie. use word fruitful in a sentence, from there continue to use words that they associate with fruit, even though it has nothing to do with their original statement.
