Document Summary
In the psychoanalytic view, conflicts unresolved during the three psychosexual stages may lead to fixation at that stage. Freud believed that our defense mechanisms operate unconsciously and defend us against anxiety. The unconscious mind is the location for problems reflecting unacceptable thoughts and feelings. free association (ink blob) and dream analysis is used to explore this hidden part of the mind. Personality results from interaction among the minds three systems: id (pleasure), ego (reality), and superego (ideal) Children pass through 5 psychosexual stages oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital. Unresolved conflicts at any stage may lead to fixation at that stage. More emphasis on the conscious mind and social motives rather than sex/aggression. They support his view that much of mental life is unconscious and childhood experiences influence adult personality. Anxiety is the product of tensions between the demands of the id and the superego. The ego copes by using unconscious defense mechanism such as repression.
