Document Summary
Psych 101- chapter 14 (health, stress, and coping) notes. Body mass index (bmi): a statistic commonly used for estimating a healthy body weight given an individual"s height. Bmi is calculated by dividing a persons weight (kg) by the square of the person"s height (in m) Set point: a hypothesized mechanism that serves to maintain body weight around a physiologically programed level. Number of hours spent on a computer did not raise obesity rates in males. In females, the ones who spent more than 11 hours/week in front of a computer had a slightly higher rate in obesity. Social culture influences have an affect on it. Discrimination affects moods which then effects the amount of food that is being consumed which then increases/decreases in weight. Social contagion: the often subtle, unintentional spreading of a behavior as a result of social interactions. Stress: a psychological and physiological reaction that occurs when perceived demands exceed existing resources to meet those demands.
